Former Yellowjacket distance running standout Sarah Anderson has been named to the WIAC All-Time Team in women's cross country.  The team has been selected as part of the WIAC's 100th anniversary celebration, which will take place during the 2012-13 season.

Anderson is one of just 14 female runners to be named to the WIAC All-Time Team.

Arguably the greatest female distance runner to ever compete at UW-Superior, Anderson was four-year letter winner in cross country, achieving All-American status and All-WIAC status three times - 1996, 1997 and 1998.  She was the conference runner-up in 1997 and won the WIAC Championship in 1998, when she finished the race with a time of 17:54.  Anderson finished 16th in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in 1996 and fourth in 1998.  She was the national runner-up in 1997.  In addition, Anderson was a WIAC Scholar Athlete and was the recipient of the 1998 Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete of the Year award in women's cross country.

“At the time Sarah was an athlete here, she was competing against some of the best runners the conference has ever seen, otherwise she would have won more than one conference championship,” said Steve Nelson, UW-Superior Director of Athletics.  “She was an incredibly hard worker and that came through in her performance, not just in cross country but in track and field, too.  We also can't overlook the fact that Sarah was an exemplary student.  She was everything that is great about a student-athlete.  She definitely deserves to be a part of this team and everyone at UW-Superior is very proud of her.”

Anderson was also a three-time All-American and five-time conference champion in track and field, starring in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races.  She won the Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete of the Year award in women's track and field in 2000, the same year she participated in the US Olympic Trials in the marathon.

Anderson was inducted into the UW-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

ABOUT THE TEAM SELECTIONS
The student-athlete representation on each team has relied heavily on input provided by the sports information director from each of the nine WIAC campuses, while the process for selecting the head coach(es) for each team also includes input from a panel of media representatives. The number of individuals selected per team varies depending upon the nature of the sport itself as well as the number of years the sport has/had been sponsored within the conference.

All-Time Team members will receive certificates from the conference and it is hoped that most, if not all, of the recipients will be in attendance or represented at the WIAC Centennial Banquet to be held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on August 4, 2012.

More information on the activities and events associated with the WIAC Centennial can be accessed via the WIAC website at www.wiacsports.com.
