SUPERIOR, Wis. - After dropping game one of the NBC Tip-Off Classic Saturday, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team squared off against UW-River Falls in the consolation game Sunday. Despite a strong second-half effort, the 'Jackets came up short, with the Falcons claiming the 63-58 victory.
Game Notes
- The Falcons jumped out to an early 12-2 lead before the Yellowjackets, led by Evan Bennett (Superior, Wis./Superior), battled back offensively to narrow the score at 14-10.
- A quiet first half for the 'Jackets saw UWRF head into half with a 24-17 lead.
- River Falls took control offensively once again as they lead by as many as 10 points at 34-24, with just over 15 minutes to go.
- UWS answered before a three pointer from Slayton Stroschein (Alborn, Minn./South Ridge) would bring the 'Jackets within five. Bennett would later follow with a shot beyond the arc of his own after Caiden Lecce (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic) sent him a feed, giving the 'Jackets a 43-42.
- Andrew Beers (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) would tack on a three for Superior at the 13 minute mark, but back-and-forth points would lead the two teams to be tied 55-55 with three minutes remaining.
- River Falls was able to take control for the remainder, which ultimately led to a five-point victory.
- Offensively, Bennett paced Superior with 18 points, while Stroschein added 11. Lecce also finished in double digits with 10 points of his own.
- Jack Leifker led the way for the Falcons with 18 points, and Gavin Ralph added nine rebounds, defensively.
Superior is back in action Friday as they open play in the Gabe Miller Classic, hosted by UW-Platteville. Tipoff against Carroll is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Bo Ryan Court.
