The Yellowjacket men's cross country team competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday, November 12, hoping that a set of strong performances would net a trip to the NCAA Championships. Unfortunately, none of the Yellowjacket runners were able to reach a time that would qualify them for the national meet, and therefore, the 2011 came to a close in Illinois.
The Yellowjackets placed 30th as a team, the same place they came in at the conclusion of the race a year ago. They did however, shave a few points off of their total from a year ago, this time around accumulating 924.
Perennial cross country power North Central College out of Illinois was the event champion, finishing with just 42 points. North Central's Matthew Perez won the event with a time of 24:41.7. North Central had four runners finish in the top 11. The top WIAC team at the meet was UW-Oshkosh, who placed third. The top WIAC individual was Tim Nelson of UW-Stout, who finished third in the race with a time of 24:59.1.
The top finisher for the Yellowjackets was junior Scott Behling (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) (Duluth, Minn.), who crossed the finish line in 26:54.0, which placed him 96th. Behind Behling on the eight-kilometer course was freshman Andy Kast (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn.) with a time of 28:33.6. Another freshman, Josh Ensign (Duluth, Minn./Two Harbors) (Duluth, Minn.), ran his best race of the year, with a personal record of 28:38.8.

The Yellowjackets sent a roster out in 2011 without a single senior. The inexperienced group came a long way in 2011, and the experienced gained by the young team will serve them well in 2012 and beyond, as the program looks to take the next step in the WIAC and on the national stage.
