On Saturday, the Yellowjacket men's cross country team participated in the 2011 WIAC Championships, traditionally a haven for Division III running elite, and this year's race proved to be no different than the past. In 2011 it was UW-Oshkosh that took home the team title with 51 points. UW-La Crosse was right on their heels with 64 points, good for second place. The Yellowjackets finished in ninth position on the day.
UW-Stout's Tim Nelson, who won the title two weeks ago at the Brooks Invitational, duplicated the feat on Saturday, winning the eight-kilometer race with a time of 24:41.5, just 14 seconds ahead of Nate Stymiest of UW-Oshkosh. Right there with the best of the race was Superior's Scott Behling (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) (Duluth, Minn.). Behling, who didn't finish the race in 2010 because of an injury, finished in 27th place, just 1:11 off the pace. Behling, who missed the first half of the 2011 season because of injury, was the top finisher for the Yellowjackets with a time of 25:52.9.
After Behling, the Yellowjackets had Josh Ensign (Duluth, Minn./Two Harbors) (Duluth, Minn.) and Andy Kast (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn.) finished within two-hundredths of a second in 58th and 59th place respectively.
