Men's Soccer Recruit: Karl Schmidtke

Karl Schmidtke

Head men's soccer coach Joe Mooney has announced his first commitment for 2012-13.  Karl Schmidtke, a standout at Wayzata (Minn.) High School told Mooney last week of his decision to become a Yellowjacket next fall.  Schmidtke, a midfielder, is expected to contribute to an offense that lost three seniors this year.

"Karl is the exact type of player that we've been looking for," Mooney said.  "He is a true utility player who can play anywhere on the field.  Between his high school and club teams, I saw Karl play just about every position on the field.  I'm not sure where we'll be using him yet.  Some of that will depend on how other pieces fit together, but with his athleticism and versatility there's no doubt he'll fit in right away."

Schmidtke starred at Wayzata High School and with his club team, Plymouth Soccer Association.  He captained both teams and will join a growing list of former PSA players already wearing black and gold.  That list includes current sophomore Matt Kelley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) as well as freshmen Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and #J.D. Wadsen#.

"It's been a lot of fun getting to know Karl through this process," Mooney said.  "Along with his athletic ability Karl's character really stands out.  It's clear that he comes from a great family and shares a lot of the same values that we encourage in our program.  It's a natural fit."

Off the field Schmidtke is an honor student at Wayzata, who is interested in majoring in environmental science.

"I have always loved the Lake Superior area, so the location was a big draw," Schmidtke said.  "I'm really looking forward to starting the next chapter and that includes playing soccer for the Yellowjackets."
