Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team met up with Macalester College last month on its spring trip to Arizona, and they had little difficulty with the Scots in a 16-3 victory. The teams were slated for a doubleheader (seven inning games) on Monday, the final non-conference games of the season for the Yellowjackets, and the going was a little bit tougher this time around. Well, for one game anyway.

Macalester 12, Yellowjackets 11

The first inning of the first game on Monday let everyone know that offense was not going to be in short supply in St. Paul.

The Yellowjackets got things started in the top of the first by scoring four times to jump ahead. Wyatt Soderquist (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) singled and stole second before going to third on a flyout. Tony Remund (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) then walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position with just one out. After Tom Fairbanks (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) was intentionally walked a run came in on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. Alex Quinones (Waterloo, Iowa/) followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Two hitters later, and again with the bases loaded, Jordan Koepp (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) singled through the right side, scoring two more to give the Yellowjackets a four-run lead before the Scots came to the plate.

But it didn't take Macalester long to answer, as they put up four runs of their own to tie the game.

The Yellowjackets regained the lead in the top of the second. With one out Matt Vold (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls) singled to left field and he would score when Remund followed with a home run over the left-center field fence. The Yellowjackets then loaded the bases on three straight walks and they made the Scots pay, using a sacrifice fly to plate their third run of the inning and build a 7-4 lead.

Macalester scored a single run in the bottom of the second to make it a two-run game.

Fairbanks walked in the top of the fourth and Sam Holden (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) brought him home on a double to right. After back-to-back strikeouts Koepp struck again, doubling to the gap in right center to score Holden and make the lead 9-5.

The Scots answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times to tie the game. The big blow was a two-run double off the bat of Quentin Stuart, and the teams went to the fifth inning tied 9-9.

The Yellowjackets again jumped ahead in the top of the fifth. With one out Remund walked, Fairbanks singled and Holden was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Quinones then singled, scoring two to make the score 11-9.

But again Macalester came back. After scoring a single run in the bottom of the fifth they surged ahead for the first time in the game, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 12-11.

The Yellowjackets got a runner on base in the top of the seventh, but they were unable to bring him home to tie the game and their three-game winning streak was snapped.

Vold and Quinones each went 3-for-4 to pace the Yellojackets offensively. Remund and Fairbanks each scored three times and Quinones and Koepp each drove in three.

Graham Miller (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland) got the start gave up nine runs on nine hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out three. Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) then pitched an inning and gave up two runs on three hits. Alex Beers (Robbinsdale, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) pitched the final inning, giving up a run on three hits. He was tagged with the loss and is now 3-3 on the year.

Yellowjackets 15, Macalester 3

The Scots kept on rolling in the second game. After they set the Yellowjackets down in the top of the first they scored three times. Stuart again delivered the big blow, driving in two with a double and the Scots were up 3-0.

The lead didn't last, however, as the Yellowjackets exploded in the top of the second. Koepp, Derek Cagle (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), and Jake Irlbeck (Centerville, Minn./Centennial) all walked to load the bases with nobody out. Alex Petroski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) singled to score Koepp and get the Yellowjackets on the board. Soderquist walked with the bases loaded, and two hitters later Remund also walked with the bases full, each scoring a run to tie the game. Fairbanks then did what he has done all season, coming through in the clutch by driving a ball over the fence in left field, his second grand slam of the season to push the Yellowjackets ahead 7-3. Later in the inning the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring, on an RBI single from Cagle.

Holden led off the top of the fourth with a walk and Koepp, having his best day as a Yellowjacket, extended the lead, hitting his first home run of the season to push the lead to 10-3. Then with two on and two out, Vold singled, scoring Soderquist and Suguru Homma (Tsuruoka, Yamagata, Japan/Nihon University Yamagata) and the score was 12-3.

In the top of the sixth the Yellowjackets scored a run on a wild pitch. Then with runners on the corners, Holden flew out to center field, scoring Remund from third and the lead was 11. The final run of the game scored in the top of the seventh on an RBI-double from Vold, making the final score 15-3.

The Yellowjackets pounded out 18 hits in the second game on Monday. Remund led the way with four hits, followed by Vold who had three. Vold also drove in three runs, second only to Fairbanks, who drove in four with the grand slam. Four Yellowjackets also had two hits in the game.

Jake Lewis (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) got the start and pitched the complete game to pick up his second win of the season. He settled down after the rough first inning, giving up just those three runs on nine hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three.

The Yellowjackets (16-9, 7-5 WIAC) will be back in conference action this weekend when they take on UW-La Crosse. The location of those games, originally scheduled for Ted Whereatt Field in Superior, is up in the air due to last week's winter storm and anticipated rain coming the latter part of this week.
