Vanden Branden’s Gem Helps Yellowjackets Salvage Split against Bethany Lutheran

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Yellowjacket baseball team was in action Saturday, as they played host to Bethany Lutheran College. The Yellowjackets were looking to continue their success in conference play as they took on the Vikings in an extremely windy day in Superior.

Bethany Lutheran 12, Yellowjackets 4

The first game of the day did not go at all as the Yellowjackets had planned.

The Vikings would score three runs off of Yellowjacket starter Brock McDermid (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) in the top of the first, and they would not look back from there, as they built a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Yellowjackets attempted to complete a comeback in the middle innings of this one. Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./West) hit a one-out infield single, before being driven in by Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) to cut the Yellowjackets deficit to 6-2 after five innings.

The Yellowjackets would cut into the deficit once more in the bottom of the sixth. The Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) opened the inning with a single to left field. Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) then was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward) then layed a perfect bunt down the third base line to load the bases with nobody out. Seth Wage (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) was then hit by a pitch with one out to score Miller and cut the deficit to 6-3. Osness shot a single through the left side to score Cuello, as the Yellowjackets cut the deficit to 6-4 after six innings.

That was all the closer the Yellowjackets would get, as Bethany Lutheran scored two run in the seventh and four in the eight to defeat the Yellowjackets 12-4.

McDermid allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings pitched. He was relieved by Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland), who allowed five runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two in 3.2 innings pitched. Tyler Kronstedt (Andover, Minn./Andover) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.

McDermid took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the season.

Yellowjackets 8, Bethany Lutheran 2

The second game played out quite a bit differently than the first.

The Yellowjackets would score the first run of the game, as Elvis Artiles Cuello (Domincan Republic/Colegio Dominicano DeLaSalle) opened up the bottom half of the third with a double to left center. Cuello then advanced to third on an error by the Viking shortstop before scoring on an error from the Viking third baseman to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.

Bethany Lutheran would score one in the top of the third to tie the game up at 1-1, but the Yellowjackets bats would answer right back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Cuello laced a double to left field, scoring both Drew Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) and Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) to put the Yellowjackets up 3-1.

The Vikings would score once more in the top of the fifth, but just as in the third inning, the Yellowjackets bats would answer right back. Once again it was Cuello involved with the offensive production, as he sent a single to left field to score Miller to give the Yellowjackets a 4-2 lead. Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) would put the finishing touches on the inning, as he hit a single to right center to score Cuello and Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward), putting the Yellowjackets up 6-2.

The Yellowjackets would score one in each the seventh and eighth, as they defeated Bethany Lutheran 8-2.

Eight runs was more than enough for Yellowjacket starter Richard Vanden Branden (Neenah, Wis./Saint Mary Central). Vanden Branden kept the Viking hitters off balance all game, allowing only two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out one in the complete-game gem. He improves to 2-2 with the win.

The Yellowjackets (13-13, 9-5 UMAC) will be back in action Tuesday, May 3 when they travel to Menomonie, Wis. to take on UW-Stout. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
