Junior forward
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.) netted her team-leading tenth goal of the season on the powerplay with just 3:37 remaining to help lead the University of Wisconsin Superior as the Yellowjackets earned a 3-2 victory and a series sweep over Finlandia University in Calumet, Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Game two of the series proved far tighter than the 7-1 blowout that UW-Superior (7-7-0) secured on Saturday night, but the Yellowjackets prevailed and returned to .500 on the season. After Finlandia (0-14) opened the scoring with a powerplay goal by Natasha Kern at the 11:51 mark, UWS was quick to answer as senior forward
Leah Elledge (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) netted her second of the season at 13:38 of the first with senior forward
Amanda Coey (Brandon, Man./Crocus Plains H.S.) earning the assist. The Yellowjackets built on that lead just under four minutes later with freshman forward
Hannah Currin (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy H.S.) scoring her fourth of the year at 17:25 of the first period, getting assists from junior
Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River H.S.) and freshman
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.).
Kern helped the Lions tie the game in the third period with her second of the game, this time assisted by Sara Martin and Theresa Wolf, at 9:43. UW-Superior had the answer in the form of Goodin, who scored at 16:23 of the third while Heid picked up her second assist of the afternoon. Junior goalie
Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) made 10 saves for the Yellowjackets, picking up the victory, while Sarah Gundry made 46 stops for Finlandia in a tough-luck loss. Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the powerplay.
