BENSON, Minn. (October 28, 2017) – Led by
Evan Walpole (Superior, Wis./Superior), the title was never in question as the University of Wisconsin-Superior solidly held off Martin Luther College and the College of St. Scholastica to win its second-consecutive conference title Saturday.
The Yellowjackets raced to a team victory as they outpaced the Knights by 16 points finishing with 40 and three top-10 finishers. Walpole became the third-straight Yellowjacket to win the men's title as he outran the next competitor by seven seconds clocking 26:10.0, an all-time personal best.
Superior's success also came thanks to solid performances from
Rand Bieri (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) and
Sam Smith (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) who finished sixth and eighth, with a 26:43.2 and a 27:17.2. Bieri's time was a personal best for him.
The Yellowjackets also took 13-14-15 with
Alex Binfet (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity),
Harrison Hirsch (Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) and
Zack Mazurek (Bessemer, Mich./Bessemer) ran within nine seconds of one another. Binfet and Hirsch were separated by hundredths of a second clocking times of 27:29.3, while Mazurek ran 27:38.7.
The 'Jackets would clock an average time of 27:01.8, and were able to shave off two points from their championship last season. The 'Jackets truly put on a stellar performance for their second cross country championship, in as many years, and will look to compete well in the NCAA Regional Saturday, Nov. 11, in Northfield, Minn.
