2016-17 UMAC Men's Basketball Awards (Feb. 28, 2017)
The University of Wisconsin Superior placed a pair of athletes in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason honors as junior guard
Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) and freshman forward
Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) earned UMAC Honorable Mention selections Tuesday.
Monteiro was just one of two first-year athletes to earn All-UMAC honors in 2016-17, finishing eighth in the league averaging 15.3 points per game on the season while also grabbing a conference-best 8.9 rebounds per outing. Monteiro shot 46.2 percent on the season while also providing a defensive punch, knocking back 33 blocks on the season. He posted nine double-doubles on the year. He posted a season-best 22 points on two occassions: against North Central on January 20, pairing it with 14 boards, and Martin Luther on Feb. 3 when he grabbed 12 rebounds.
Coleman finished just outside the top-10 at 11th overall in the conference, scoring 14.6 points per game on average. He shot 52.7 percent from the floor and averaged 4.8 boards per outing. His 2.8 assists per game average was seventh best in the conference. Coleman earned a double-double on December 3 at North Central, and posted a season-best 31 points against Finlandia on December 10.
Senior center
Sam Williams (Brule, Wis./Northwestern H.S.) was named the Yellowjacket recipient of the UMAC Sportsmanship Award. He appeared in eight games including one start for the Yellowjackets. Bethany Lutheran College senior Brandyn Felix earned the title of UMAC Player of the Year, while Crown College rookie Timothy Wendel was the league's Freshman of the Year. Northland College bench boss Scott Sorenson earned the title of UMAC Coach of the Year.
