The University of Wisconsin Superior lived to play another game as the Yellowjackets escaped with a 12-11 victory over the University of Minnesota Morris on Friday afternoon, but UW-Superior (16-26) faces yet another elimation game in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament as the team takes on the loser of the second round match-up between the College of St. Scholastica and Bethany Lutheran College on Friday evening.
Senior
Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial H.S.) muscled through six innings on the mound, settling down after a bit of early wildness as Minn. Morris (18-20) scored four runs in the first three innings against the right-hander. Schneider would finish with just those four runs allowed on five hits, but walked five and had a wild pitch bring home a run early in the game. The Yellowjackets would take advantage of wildness from the Cougars' pitching staff as well as they drew five walks and had six batters hit-by-pitch in the game. Entering the fourth inning without a hit on the day, UWS would score three runs in the fifth, five in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth to take a 12-6 lead to the final frame. Morris scored five runs in the ninth, but senior
Trevor Stone (Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn H.S.) came on to shut the door, getting the final out and wrapping up a save in a 12-11 victory.
Senior third baseman
Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly H.S.) was hit by pitch three times on the day and drew a bases-loaded walk, one of three in the five-run sixth, for an RBI on the day. A pair of rookies contributed big, with outfielder
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs while it was designated hitter
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.)Â whose eighth-inning three-run home run proved the difference in the game. The bottom of the order - sophomore
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) and juniors
Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.) and
Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel H.S.) - combined to score seven runs on the day for the Yellowjackets. Joey Hyde worked the first 4.1 innings for the Cougars, surrendering three runs on five hits, but hit four batters before being relieved by Tyler Hannan who suffered the loss, walking three and giving up five runs on two hits.
