The University of Wisconsin Superior will host a four-team holiday tournament in 2017-18 as the Yellowjackets face a strong slate of opponents during the second season under head coach Rich McKenna.
UW-Superior finished 8-19-2 a season ago and just 1-6-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season but pulled an upset in the first round of the WIAC Commissioner's Cup tournament, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a mini-game three to advance to the semifinals. The Yellowjackets will look for a turn-around in year two with McKenna behind the bench beginning on Friday, Oct. 27 on the road against a former rival from the days of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), Lake Forest College. The Foresters were 16-10-0 a season ago, and the two teams have not met in six-plus seasons. That Saturday, UWS travels to Concordia University (Wis.) for a matinee match-up at 4 p.m.
The Yellowjackets return home for the first time on Friday, Nov. 3 for two straight weeks against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes, taking on Augsburg College at home before hitting the road the next week against Gustavus Adolphus College and St. Olaf College. The Yellowjackets are home for four games over two weeks heading into Thanksgiving weekend. First hosting regional rival Northland College on Friday, Nov. 17, then Finlandia University that Saturday, the University of St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 24, and finally, taking on bridge rival the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Nov. 25. Those teams have not competed since November 23, 2013, a 3-2 victory for UW-Superior.
The conference season begins on Friday, Dec. 1 as the Yellowjackets meet the aforementioned UW-Stout on the road in Menomonie. UWS takes on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the defending WIAC champion and an NCAA III Tournament participant a season ago, on Saturday, Dec. 2. After closing the first half on Dec. 9 with another match-up against Finlandia, the Yellowjackets host their holiday tournament on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 29 and 30. Marian University takes on the Milwaukee School of Engineering in game one Friday at 3 p.m. while UW-Superior takes on Concordia College (Minn.) on the opposite side of the bracket. The winners meet at 7:05 p.m. the next day while the losers compete earlier in the afternoon.
After breaking away for non-conference match-ups throughout the month of January, the Yellowjackets finish up the regular season with six-straight conference match-ups including four at home. The season concludes with the five-team Commissioner's Cup Tournament to crown a WIAC Champion. The four-five seed weekend takes place on Feb. 16-17 with semifinal round action at home sites on Feb. 23-24, and the championship game hosted by the top remaining seed on Saturday, March 3.
