DULUTH, Minn. (May 10, 2018) – Superior split in the opening day of the UMAC Tournament on Thursday, getting a big win over Northland, but then fell to the no. 1 seeded Saints.

Game 1

The Yellowjackets took charge in the first inning of play. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would walk to get on base with two outs, followed by a Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount) jack that carried over the center-field wall for a 2-0 lead after one.

Barr pitched well, getting the start on the mound; he tossed a no-hit game until the fourth inning, while the Yellowjackets added to their lead to help him settle in.

Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) got on base with two singles, followed by another from Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) through the left side for a 4-0 lead. C. Albertson would single down the line to score McNosky, followed by a Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) single up the middle to score C. Albertson at 6-0.

The Yellowjackets added three more in the inning when Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) scored three on a bases clearing double for a 9-0 lead after two.

Another run scored in the top of the third when C. Albertson doubled and was brought home on a wild pitch for 10-0.

In the fourth inning, Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) walked to start the inning, and was scored on a Lawniczak single to right field. The Lumberjacks also scored in the fourth on one hit to center field.

The Yellowjackets saw more support from C. Albertson when he blasted a ball over the center-field wall for a 13-0 lead.

The final 'Jacket run came on a Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater) bases-clearing double to center for a 14-1 game. Northland threatened in the final seventh, but scored just one run at 14-2.

Game 2

The second game was much different than the first as the Saints scored eight runs in the first inning, and went on to get four in the fourth, and five in the fifth.

The Yellowjackets found a spark in the sixth inning when Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) advanced on a walk, scoring Osness who had singled to start the inning. McNosky score pinch runner Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) on a ground ball to second on the next play. C. Albertson then continued to hit the deep ball, launching a ball to left field for two RBIs and two scores for a 17-4 game.

The Saints scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to seal the score at 19-4.
