Twin Ports Invite
Hosted by UW-Superior

Meet Results

The Yellowjacket women's track and field team was in action Saturday as they participated in the Twin Ports Invite, a meet they host. The Yellowjackets were looking to build some momentum following a successful showing at the Super 8 Open at Bemidji, Minn. last weekend.

They did that and more, as they set four school records on the day.

Valerie Rowe (Ironwood, Mich./Bessemer) got things started for the Yellowjackets by setting a new school record in the 200-meter hurdles. Rowe finished with a time of 30.31, finishing second overall, to break Jill Suominen's old record of 30.37 that was set in 1994.

Svenja Ruehl (Kirchuers, Germany/Gymnasium Philippinum Marburg) joined in on the record breaking by setting a new record in the 60-meter hurdles, running a 9.52 in the prelims to knock off Sam (Miller) Wilson's former record of 9.65. Ruehl finished the final with a 9.68 to pace third overall.

The next group of record breakers came from the 4x1600-meter relay team that consisted of Ali Manthey (Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River), Sara Schield (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors), Kalley Wilkie (Hayward, Wis./Hayward), and Selina Walthers. They came in third overall with a time of 26:11.59, setting the school record in the process.

The biggest news of the day came from the women's sprint medley. The Yellowjacket team consisting of Kaitlyn Knutson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet), Alissa Boyhtari (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), Jackie Erickson (Duluth, Minn./East), and Kelli Praska (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) stole the show at the meet. Not only did they finish first overall with a time of 4:23.03, but they set a new school record and faculty record in the process as they shattered the former record of 4:27.88 set in 2008 by Audrey Karbowski, Nikki Landon, Jenna Halverson, and Kate Rosberg.

The sprint medley team had another first in their race, first in the nation for the women's sprint medley. Their time places them as the best sprint medley team in all divisions and all levels: DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA.

"I couldn't be more proud the effort that those four put forth today." Coach Glen Drexler said. "Not only did they set a new school record, but they are now the top team in the nation in the women's medley relay."

Ruehl had another first on the day, winning the long jump by reaching a distance of 17 feet 2 inches.

Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior) placed second in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet 2.75 inches. The throw gave Phillips a new personal record.

The Yellowjackets had multiple relay teams put on a good show today. The 4x200-meter team consisting of Knutson, Ruehl, Silene John, and Erickson finished third overall with a time of 1:55.16. The 4x800-meter team consisting of Boyhtari, Taylor Joyal (Saginaw, Minn./South Ridge), Michaela Ruhman (Brule, Wis./Northwestern), and Praska finished second overall with a time of 10:37.99.

The women's distance medley relay teams came in with second and third place finishes, with the team of Wilkie, Ruhman, Rachel Hillis, and Ali Manthey (Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River) finishing second and the team of Walther, Erickson, Al iKloncz, and Schield finishing third.

Carsen Wetzel (Waterville, Minn./Waterville-Elysian-Morristown) placed third in the high jump, finishing with a jump of 4 feet 7 inches. Rowe took home second in the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet 1 inch, while teammate Liza Shelquist took home third with a vault of 5 feet 8 inches.

"We had a big day overall as a team." said Drexler. "It's definitely something that we can build off of with some strong competition coming up in the next few meets."

The Yellowjackets will be back in action Friday, January 29 when they travel to Menomonie, Wis. to take part in the Warren Bowlus Open. The meet is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
