St. Scholastica "The Opener" Results (12/3/2016)
The University of Wisconsin Superior had a strong showing across the bridge at Saturday's indoor track & field "Opener" hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. While the Yellowjackets did not take home a first place finish on the day in the field featuring several schools from NCAA II but had a number of top-five and top-ten finishes where UWS finished top among Division III teams.
Three first-year athletes got the day started for the Yellowjackets on the track. Freshman
Leann Torgerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors H.S.) finished third in the 400-meter Dash with a time of 1:04.14, just behind a pair of runners from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Maria Mazo (Hendaye, France/Irungo La Salle) finished fifth in the 60-meter Hurdles with a time of 0:09.42.
Sequoia Borner (Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong H.S.) finished the 60-meter Dash just half of a second off the school record and fifth overall on the day with a time of 0:08.12.
Sophomore
Ali Manthey (Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River) rounded out the top individual finishers for the Yellowjackets on the track, finishing 11th in the 3,000-meter Run with a time of 12:44.12. Valerie Rowe (Ironwood, Mich./A.D. Johnston H.S.), junior
Kaitlyn Knutson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet H.S.) finished fifth with a time of 4:20.13.
Rowe also posted a personal-best performance in the pole vault, finishing third behind a pair from UMD with a height of 2.77 meters. Sophomore
Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) posted a pair of personal records throwing, finishing third in the shot put with a distance of 12.70 meters and sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 13.45 meters. She bested her previous PR in the shot by over two-thirds of a meter.
