The Yellowjacket women's track and field team was in action Saturday as they hit the road for another meet. They did not have to travel very far today, as they traveled over the bridge to the College of St. Scholastica to take part in the Lake Superior Challenge.

This meet belonged to Svenja Ruehl (Kirchuers, Germany/Gymnasium Philippinum Marburg). Ruehl started out the day by breaking her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, coming in with a time of 9.40 seconds to shave .12 seconds off of the record she had set two weeks prior. Ruehl then went on to place third in the 60-meter hurdle finals, coming in behind only two DII runners.

The track events were not the only area Ruehl had success, as she was competing in the long jump also. With little rest time between events, Ruehl showed just how much of an athlete she is, as she jumped a new personal best of 17 feet, 11 inches (5.46 meters) to win the event. That mark currently places Ruehl at 17th on the DIII national list, with the top 20 going to the NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Ruehl wasn't the only Yellowjacket to have a big day. Kelli Praska (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) continued her strong freshman campaign Saturday. Praska went on to win the mile, coming in with a time of 5:17.70, easily outpacing the second place runner, who finished with a time of 5:23.64. Praska also had a good day with the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:00.15 to place third overall, coming in behind only two DII runners.

Other top finishers for the Yellowjackets include Michaela Rhuman, who won the 600-meter dash. Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior) placed third in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet 8.75 inches (11.80 meters). Allie Kloncz (Princeton, Minn./Princeton) also had a good 600-meter dash, coming in in fifth place.

By the end of the meet, the Yellowjackets had set 24 new personal records and broke one school record.

The Yellowjackets are back in action Saturday, February 13 when they host the Yellowjacket Open at the Lydia S. Thering Fieldhouse. The field events will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the track events beginning at noon.

The meet is also the alumni weekend for Yellowjacket Cross Country and Track and Field. All are welcome to enjoy the festivities and social afterword. Contact Coach Drexler for more information.
