The Yellowjacket men's track and field team was in action Saturday when they took the short drive over the bridge to Duluth, Minn. to take part in the Lake Superior Challenge hosted by St. Scholastica.

As they have for most of the season, the throwers stole the show in this one.

Thomas Udenburg continued his strong senior season with another event victory. The throw that won Udenburg the event came in at 52 feet, 8.75 inches (16.07 meters) as he blasted away the field, defeating the second place finisher by 4 feet, 4.25 inches (1.33 meters).

Tony Willete also had a good showing at the shot put, coming in fourth with a top throw of 43 feet, 6.5 inches (13.27 meters).

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came from the weight throw event. Thomas Fleming (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) threw the best throw of his career on the day. Fleming's throw of 54 feet, 4 inches (16.56 meters) placed him third in the event and placed him as the 20th in the NCAA DIII weight throw rankings, with the top 18 going to nationals.

"Tommy has been working very hard in the weight room this year." Yellowjacket Throwing Coach Sam Maday said. "He has not only made a commitment to the event, but he has really found his groove and quite frankly, has surprised me with his throws so far this year.  I look forward to seeing what else he has in him!"

Udenburg also competed in the weight throw, placing fifth with a throw of 51 feet, 1.75 inches (15.59 meters)

Other top Yellowjacket finishers were Tyler Modderman-Anderson, who placed second in the pole vault. Henry Haberman finished third in the triple jump, while teammate Zach Myran (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) was right behind him in fourth. Alex Dzikonski (South Range, Wis./Superior) placed fifth in the 60-meter dash, while Zach Mazurek (Bessemer, Mich./A.D. Johnston) came in fifth in the 3,000-meter run.

By the time the meet wrapped up the Yellowjackets had set 17 new personal record and four new season best marks.

The Yellowjackets will be back in action Saturday, February 13 when they host the Yellowjacket Open at the Lydia S. Thering Fieldhouse. The field events are set to get underway at 11:30 a.m. with the track events getting going at noon.

The meet also marks alumni weekend for the Yellowjacket cross country and track and field teams. All alumni are invited to come and enjoy the festivities and social afterword. Contact Coach Glen Drexler for more information.
