Champion Yellowjackets sweep UMAC's top awards; 12 earn all-conference honors

2016-17 UMAC Men's Indoor Track & Field All-Conference Awards (Feb. 28, 2017)

The University of Wisconsin Superior claimed a dominating team Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championship over the weekend, and fittingly, the Yellowjackets swept the top awards for the meet including placing 12 on the All-UMAC teams.

Senior Alex Fathie (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall H.S.) earned the title of Track Athlete of the Meet. He was victorious in three events: individually in  the 400-meter dash and also as part of the UW-Superior's 4-by-200-meter and 4-x-400 meter relay teams. He also finished second in the individual 200-meter dash. Joining him in the 4-by-200 were freshman Matt Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown H.S.), sophomore Alex Dzikonski (South Range, Wis./Superior H.S.), and junior Joe Olinger (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes H.S.); Dzkionski, Fathie, sophomore Matt Swanson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) and junior Noah Potratz (Ripon, Wis./Ripon H.S.) made up the 4-by-400-meter team. Dzikonski finished with three championships, also claiming the long jump. Swanson earned an All-UMAC pick and individual championship in the 800-meter run as well. For Fathie, Dzikonski, and Olinger, it was their second-straight All-UMAC selection.

Sophomore C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) was named the FIeld Athlete of the Meet. He reigned victorious as the individual champion in the weight throw and finished second in the shot put. Senior Thomas Udenberg (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet H.S.) earned his second-straight All-UMAC selection as the individual champion in the shot put. Senior Tommy Fleming (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake H.S.), who finished second in the weight throw, also earned All-UMAC honors among Yellowjacket throwers.

Junior Jordan Koski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon H.S.) finished second in both of his events on the weekend: the 5,000-meter run and the 3,000-meter run to land All-UMAC honors for the first time. Senior Evan Wapole also earned his first All-UMAC pick while finishing second in the mile. Junior Henry Haberman finished second in the high jump, claiming the second UMAC all-conference pick of his indoor career.

Head coach Glen Drexler was named the league's Coach of the Year in claiming the team's first-ever UMAC Indoor Championship. Potratz also earned the UMAC Sportsmanship Award for UW-Superior.
