2016-17 UMAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Awards (Feb. 28, 2017)
After a second-place finish at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday, the University of Wisconsin Superior placed five athletes on the All-UMAC teams announced Tuesday including five individual event cfhampions and two-time UMAC Field Athlete of the Meet, junior
Svenja Ruehl (Kirchuers, Germany/Gymnasium Philippinum Marburg).
Ruehl repeated as the top performer in the field for UMAC women at the indoor meet while also landing on the All-UMAC team for the second time in her career. She claimed three individual championships in the 60-meter dash, long jump, and triple jump and also placed second in the 60-meter hurdles. She has now won back-to-back UMAC titles in the two jumping events.
Sophomores
Taylor Phillips (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) and
Kelli Praska (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) also repeat as All-UMAC selections. Phillips claimed her first individual event championship in the shot put, while Praska finished second in both the mile and the 800-meter run. Sophomore
Valerie Rowe (Ironwood, Mich./A.D. Johnston H.S.) earned her first All-UMAC selection after winning an event championships in the pole vault while also finished third in the 400-meters and second in the 200-meters. First-year trackster
Leann Torgerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors H.S.) also earned All-UMAC honors for the first time in her career. She had a third-place finish in the 200-meter and a second-place finishes in the 60-meter dash and the 400-meter run.
The College of St. Scholastica senior Taylor Gibson earned the title of UMAC Track Athlete of the Year. The champion Saints' head coach Todd Bouchie was named the conference's Coach of the Year.
