Lake Superior Challenge (2/4/2017) - Results
The University of Wisconsin Superior did not have far to travel, crossing the bridge for Saturday's Lake Superior Challenge hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, and posted 30 personal record performances and several top-10 showings at the triangular meet also featuring the host Saints and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Senior
Alex Fathie (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall H.S.) had the first top-three finish of the day for the Yellowjackets, finished second overall and first among collegiate runners behind an unattached former Division I athlete. He posted a personal record in the process finished at 1:23.65, almost two seconds better than his previous best effort. UW-Superior swept the 800-meter run with freshman
Eddie Carlson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul H.S.) taking the top honors at 2:08.46, followed by sophomores
Marinel Walfridsson (Aastorp, Sweden/Filborna H.S.) (2:10.30) and
Zach Mazurek (Bessemer, Mich./Bessemer H.S.) (2:11.61), all posting personal records in the event. The last top-three finish on the track came from the 4-by-400-meter relay team, which finished second behind only NCAA II's UMD. Fathie, Carlson, sophomore
Rand Bieri (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet H.S.), and
Evan Walpole (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior H.S.) posted a time of 3:39.56.
Junior
Jordan Koski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon H.S.) posted a PR in the mile run, shaving nearly four seconds off his time to finish fourth at 4:29.73 behind a trio of runners UMD. In the 200-meter run, sophomore
Matt Swanson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) finished ninth behind eight runners from UMD at 0:24.51 followed shortly behind by freshman
Matt Carlson (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown H.S.) who posted a time of 0:24.55.
In the field, junior Henry Haberman posted his career-best leap in the high jump at 1.85 meters. Senior
Zach Myran (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) was just 0.02 off his own personal record in the long jump at 5.37 meters. Sophomore
C.J. Pillath (Coleman, Wis./Coleman H.S.) continued to rack up first-place finishes as he posted a career-best 15.09-meter throw in the shot put, adding nearly half a meter to his attempt. He also finished second behind a hurler from UMD in the weight throw at 16.77 meters. Senior
Thomas Udenberg (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet H.S.) finished just behind Pillath in the shot at 15.07 meters, while senior
Tommy Fleming (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake H.S.) was third in the weight throw at 16.44 meters.
UP NEXT
Some of the top Yellowjackets will be in action at the St. Thomas Select Meet on Friday afternoon, but the entire UW-Superior team will be in action at Saturday's Yellowjacket Open at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse. The first action is set to get underway at 11:30 a.m. in Superior.
