River Falls 3, Yellowjackets 0
On Wednesday, Mother Nature made it as if she was going to intervene and potentially cancel the WIAC match between the Yellowjackets and River Falls. The best she could do, however, was a delay. Lightning in the area shut the game down during the first half, but when play resumed, the Falcons took control scoring twice in less than three minutes, on their way to a 3-0 victory over the Yellowjackets.
The Falcon attack focused on the right wing, as both goals came courtesy of the right side. Eryn Lansverk opened the scoring with a kick from the right side that eluded Yellowjacket goalkeeper Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) (Anaheim, Calif.) to make it 1-0 at 26:36. Janae Baron had the assist. Minutes later at 29:22 it went to 2-0 as Baron and Lansverk teamed up again. On the second goal, Paige came out to challenge the shooter and collided with a teammate, giving Baron a clear shot and she scored the easy goal to double the lead.
After halftime, the Falcons applied heavy offensive pressure, pinning the Yellowjackets on their own end of the field. The best opportunity for the Yellowjackets came with about 17 minutes to play when Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) (Two Harbors, Minn.) sent a kick off the crossbar. Then, with 2:11 to play, Shaunna Joyce sealed the win, scoring the goal that made the final margin 3-0.
The Falcons held a 28-3 edge in shots attempted, including a 16-0 advantage in shots on goal. Paige finished the match with 13 saves.
The Yellowjackets (6-8, 0-5 WIAC) are on the road this weekend, where they will play in Milwaukee against Mount Mary on Saturday, October 15. Play begins at 12:00 p.m.
