Late goal by Chapman leads to Tie

Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Chapman 1

The Yellowjacket men's soccer team found themselves in a neutral field match on Saturday, taking on Chapman University out of Orange, Calif. on the home field of UW-Whitewater.  Chapman, who had been nationally-ranked earlier in the year, entered the match 8-3-1.  Despite the tough competition, the Yellowjackets used the match to give some inexperienced players some playing time against a quality opponent and nearly came away with a victory, if not for a late goal which Chapman used to salvage a 1-1 tie.

After a scoreless first half, the Yellowjackets opened the scoring when Logan George (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.) converted on a penalty kick to make it 1-0 in the 64th minute.  For George, it was his team-leading fifth goal of the year.  He also leads the team with 14 points.  The score stayed that way, and it looked as if the Yellowjackets were going to win their second straight, but the Panthers had other plans.  With just 1:22 to play, Brett Richardson scored an unassisted goal to tie the score at 1-1, forcing overtime.

During the extra sessions, the Yellowjackets had three golden opportunities to win the match, but came away empty-handed on each.

Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) (New Hope, Minn.) got the start for the Yellowjackets and finished the match with nine saves.  Pedro Velasquez and Devin Foy combined to make three saves.  Chapman nearly doubled up the Yellowjackets in shots attempted, holding a 27-14 edge.  Shots on goal were 10-4 in favor of Chapman.  George and Alberto Rivero (Santander, Spain) each had three shots attempted, which led the Yellowjackets.  George had half of the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets in the match.

The Yellowjackets (9-4-1, 2-2 WIAC) will have their second crack of the year at UW-Whitewater, when the two teams meet at Fiskum Field, home of the Warhawks, on Sunday, October 16.  The match begins at 2:00 p.m.
