Yellowjackets 5, Mount Mary 0
The Yellowjacket women's soccer team took to the field on Saturday with one goal in mind - snapping the skid. On Saturday, October 1 they put an 11-0 thrashing on Mount Mary, but have dropped their three matches since then. Saturday, the opponent was again Mount Mary, this time at their field, and the Blue Angels were accommodating hosts.
Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) (Hermantown, Minn.),who has been an offensive force in her freshman season, paced the Yellowjackets with a pair of goals and an assist as the Yellowjackets rolled to a 5-0 win.
Ana Morse (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central) (Duluth, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets on an assist from Cossin at 20:34 to make it 1-0. The Yellowjackets would strike again just minutes later, as Cossin scored her first of the game, unassisted, in the 27th minute to make it 2-0. The Yellowjackets added one more in the first half when Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) (Cloquet, Minn.) picked up the goal to make it 3-0. Mandee Akason (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) (Pine Island, Minn.) and Jennifer Bucci (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) (Duluth, Minn.) were credited with the assists on the play.
In the second half, Askason, who scored four times in the first meeting between the two teams, found the back of the net again, this time on an assist from Mallory Engen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson) (Hutchinson, Minn.), to make it 4-0 at 53:50. Cossin closed out the scoring with her second goal of the match at 65:02 to make it 5-0. Savannah Schramm (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) (Carlton, Minn.) assisted.
The Yellowjackets handily outshot the Blue Angels in the match, owning a 25-0 edge in shots on goal. The zero-save shutout for Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) (Anaheim, Calif.) will go down as the easiest whitewashing of her career. Kirby McMahon and Ashley Leverenz combined in goal to make 20 saves for Mount Mary.
The Yellowjackets (7-9, 0-6 WIAC) will be taking on UW-Platteville at home on Saturday, October 22. The match will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Superior High School Soccer Complex.
