Second half surge gives Yellowjackets a tie at Augsburg

Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, Augsburg 2

You can tell the Yellowjacket men's soccer team really, really loves the sport.  That is evident by the fact that the team refuses to play just 90 minutes, as the rules dictate a regulation match should be.  Instead, they opt to play the standard 90, and then some.

On Tuesday night, the eighth-ranked Yellowjackets went to overtime for the fourth consecutive match, scoring twice in the second half to force extra time and earning at 2-2 tie at Augsburg.

It was the sixth overtime game of the season for the Yellowjackets, who are 3-1-2 when games go beyond regulation time.

The Auggies opened the scoring early in the first half, converting a shot off of a free kick at 5:32 to make it 1-0.  Matt Bowman had the free kick from the left side of the box and O.P. Marcellino directed it home for his first goal of the season.  The lead went to 2-0 in the 55th minute when Mathias Macody Lund scored his second goal of the season via the penalty kick.

The Yellowjackets were finally able to break through at 65:13 when freshman Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn.) sent the header into the back of the goal off a free kick from about 25 yards out to make it 2-1.  Carey's first career goal was assisted by Logan George (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.).  The comeback was completed at 78:10, again off a free kick.  Eric Nilsen (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) (Duluth, Minn.) had the free kick from midfield, and the ball deflected off Augsburg goalkeeper Clayton Lynch as he tried to make the punch save, tying the match at 2-2.  The goal was the fourth of the year for Nilsen.

The Auggies carried the play in the match, and they outshot the Yellowjackets 18-9, including 5-1 in overtime.  The shots on goal advantage also went to the Auggies, 6-4.  Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) (New Hope, Minn.) made four saves for the Yellowjackets.  Lynch made two saves for Augsburg in regulation, before being replaced by Will Morlock at the start of the overtime.

Carey and Thomas Shuldheisz (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn.) each attempted two shots in the match, and four Yellowjackets each had one shot on goal.

The Yellowjackets (9-5-2, 2-3 WIAC) are back in conference play, when they host UW-Platteville at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
