Box Score Yellowjackets 2, Northland International 1
Earlier in the year, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team blanked Northland International at home, but the rematch in Dunbar, Wis. was a much more dramatic affair then the first meeting. The Yellowjackets held a 10-6 edge in shots on goal, but the actual score was much closer, with the Yellowjackets sweeping the season series by a narrow 2-1 margin.
The Yellowjackets got on the board at the 25-minute mark when
Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) (Cloquet, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-0. The score would stay that way until well into the second half when Northland International would tie it up. In the 70th minute, Carissa Koenig, on an assist from Nicole Wung would put one past Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) (Anaheim, Calif.) to tie the match at 1-1. It wouldn't take long for the Yellowjackets to answer, however. Just six minutes later team scoring leader
Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) (Hermantown, Minn.) would regain the lead for the Yellowjackets, converting a feed from
Alexa Schiffman (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn.) to make it 2-1. From there, the Yellowjacket defense tightened up, not allowing Northland International much in the way of offense, and when they did manage a scoring opportunity, Paige was there to slam the door.
Paige finished the match with five saves, while Jo Paine made eight saves at the other end for Northland International.
The Yellowjackets (8-10, 0-7 WIAC) will close out the 2011 season on Saturday, October 29 with a road match at UW-Oshkosh. Play will begin at 11:00 a.m.
