Bethany Lutheran 1, Yellowjackets 0
On Wednesday night in Mankato, Minn., the Yellowjacket women's soccer team was looking to stretch its winning streak to four matches, which would have tied a school record. They played well enough to win, but unfortunately things don't always work out that way.
The match was scoreless through the first half. Then all of regulation time. Then the first overtime. And then, with 1:12 to play in the second overtime, Bethany Lutheran caught the break they needed and scored the lone goal of the match, taking the 1-0 victory and the Yellowjacket winning streak with it.
Hannah Spaulding was the goal scorer for the Vikings, beating Yellowjacket goaltender Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) (Anaheim, Calif.) for the deciding goal in the waning seconds of the second extra frame.
The Yellowjackets carried the play in the match and continued their strong offensive play, outshooting the Vikings 28-17 and holding a 14-9 edge in shots on goal. However, they couldn't solve Viking goalkeeper Alexa Mowery, who finished with 14 saves. Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) (Cloquet, Minn.) led the Yellowjackets with four shots on goal.
Paige made eight saves for the Yellowjackets. The game-winning goal was the first goal Paige allowed since Stevens Point scored with 30:49 to play in the second half back on September 24, a span of 399:37.
The Yellowjackets (6-6, 0-3 WIAC) return home on Saturday, October 8 when they play host to UW-La Crosse in the second match of a soccer double header. Play is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Superior High School Soccer Complex.
