Penalties were the story on Saturday afternoon - for both teams. It was Adrian's power play, however that came through as they nipped the Yellowjackets 3-2 on Saturday at Wessman Arena.
Superior had four power play opportunities in the first period alone, but failed to capitalize on any of them. It was in the second period where the offenses started to come alive. The Yellowjackets opened the scoring when Kiara De Kezel (Deloraine, Manitoba/Deloraine) dished the puck to Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) at the point, and she took a slap shot that beat Adrian's Brittany Zeches to make it 1-0. Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) added to the lead when she took a pass from Graham at hte blue line, skated straight in and fired a writst shot home to make it 2-0 on the power play goal. The lead would be short-lived, however, as Adrian would score three unanswered goals to close out the contest. Kristen Maton scored unassisted on the power play at 18:17 of the second to make it a 2-1 game. They would tie it up just 65 seconds later on an even strength goal by Nina Laurie. Laurie would score the game-winner on a power play at 3:48 of the third period to make the final score 3-2.
It was ultimately the power play of each team that made the difference as Adria nwas 2-3 while Superior checked in at 1-8. The two teams combined for 21 penalties in the contest.
Yellowjacket goaltender Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) would finish the game with 15 saves while Adrian's Zeches finished made 27 stops.
The Yellowjackets (3-2-2, 2-1-1 NCHA) will have a two-week break following a seven-game homestand to start the season. Their next action will come on the road, when they are at UW-River Falls on December 2-3.
