Box Score

Over the years, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team and UW-River Falls have played some very important and very tight games against each other.  Last year, the Yellowjackets weren't able to defeat the Falcons, who went onto the NCHA championship.  That was last year.  In their first meeting of 2011-12, the Yellowjackets didn't score many, but they didn't need to.

Team scoring leader Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) scored with 1:21 remaining in overtime, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 win over the Falcons at W.H. Hunt Arena on Friday night.

After two scoreless periods the Yellowjackets were finally able to break the stalemate at 11:02 of the third period when Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) scored her second goal of the season to make it 1-0.  Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) had the lone assist on the goal.  The Falcons came roaring back, however, and tied the game on the power play with 3:51 remaining in regulation on a goal by Darion Bruyere.

In the overtime, the Yellowjackets found themselves on the power play just 1:10 in.  They weren't able to convert with the advantage, however, they built the momentum they needed and that carried over once the power play expired.  Keeping the puck in the offensive zone, Schultz scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season 29 seconds after the advantage expired to give the Yellowjackets the win.  Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) had the assist on the game winner.

Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) got the start and recorded the win for the Yellowjackets, capping a sterling performance between the pipes with 31 saves.  Melissa Deardorff made 22 saves for River Falls.

The Yellowjackets took four penalties in the game for eight minutes, while River Falls was called for six penalties totaling 12 minutes.  The Yellowjackets were 0-6 on the power play while the Falcons were 1-3.

The Yellowjackets (4-2-2, 3-1-1 NCHA) and the Falcons will play game two of their weekend series on Saturday, December 3 at W.H. Hunt Arena at 2:00 p.m.
