On Friday night, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team rode the wave of power play momentum to an overtime winner, beating the Falcons on their home ice 2-1.  Saturday, it was the Falcons turn to score a goal late, returning the favor and defeating the Yellowjackets 2-1 to salvage a split in their NCHA weekend series.

The Falcons broke through early, very early, after need nearly all of Friday's 60 minutes to put one on the board.  Katie Batters scored her fourth goal of the season just 17 seconds into the game to stake the Falcons to the 1-0 lead.  The Yellowjackets would come back to tie the game at 9:54 when Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) picked up her second goal of the season, on an assist from Kelsey Firkus (Chilliwack, British Columbia/Chilliwack Senior Secondary).

With the score tied 1-1, the teams would skate through the second half of the first period and all of the second period deadlocked.  The teams would play nearly 15 minutes of the third period and still remain at a stalemate until the Falcons caught a break on the power play.  With Emily Neitzel (Grandville, Mich./) off for tripping, Allie Olson converted for the Falcons, giving them the 2-1 lead on the power play.  The Yellowjackets would have opportunities in the final five minutes of the game, but were never able to get the equalizer.

Just like Friday, the Yellowjackets were outshot handily by the Falcons, and just like Friday it was Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) turning in another stellar goaltending performance.  Peters followed up her 31-save performance of Friday by making 35 saves on Saturday.  Ashley Kuechle made 25 saves for the Falcons.

River Falls went 1-5 on the power play while the Yellowjackets were 0-4.  The Yellowjackets took six penalties for 12 minutes while River Falls took four penalties for eight minutes.

The Yellowjackets (4-3-2, 3-2-1 NCHA) will continue their road swing next weekend, playing at Finlandia University in Hancock, Mich. on Friday and Saturday December 9-10.  Game times are 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
