Yellowjackets 1, Morris 0
On Friday afternoon, the Yellowjacket men's soccer team found Collegeville, Minn. to be anything but to its liking. Despite a gutsy effort, the Yellowjackets were unable to break through and suffered their first defeat of the season. Saturday afternoon offered the chance for redemption, not only to avenge Friday's loss, but to exorcise some demons from a year ago.
Minnesota-Morris came to the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex on September 6, 2010 and went home with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal scored with just 2:21 to play in regulation. Saturday, the Yellowjackets turned the tables on the Cougars, scoring early and hanging on for a 1-0 win.
Just over halfway through the first half, sophomore midfielder Alberto Rivero (Santander, Spain) scored on a corner kick, notching his second goal of the season to make it 1-0 Yellowjackets.
That's all the offense they would need, as strong team defense and the goaltending of Nick Osborn (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) (Rosemount, Minn.) kept the Cougars off the board. The freshman goalkeeper would finish the match with four saves and is now 2-0 on the season, having not allowed a goal.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Cougars 11-10 in the match, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets (3-1, 0-0 WIAC) are now off until Saturday, September 17, when they make their 2011 home debut and open conference play against UW-Oshkosh. The Titans were chosen to win the conference in the 2011 pre-season poll. Game time from the Superior High School Soccer Complex will be 1:00 p.m.
