Yellowjackets 8, Finlandia 0
In the second game of the Yellowjacket soccer doubleheader at the Superior High School Soccer Complex, the men's soccer team took a cue from the women's team that earlier in the day blew out Finlandia 8-0. Like the women, the men's team played Finlandia. Like the women, the men scored a goal in the first minute of the match, and like the women they put eight goals on the board, routing the Lions by the same 8-0 score.
With the win, the Yellowjackets won their fourth match in a row and were victorious for the fifth time in their last six matches. The last time a Yellowjacket team won four in a row was September 30-October 12, 2007.
The offense started flowing early for the Yellowjackets, as they got on the board in the first minute and didn't stop scoring until there were fewer than ten minutes to play. Ben Royce (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) got the scoring started with his first goal of the year just 12 seconds in to make it 1-0. Royce added his second goal of the match at 12:58 to make it 2-0. Brian Chapman (Maple Grove, Minn./) (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up his first goal of the season at 14:28 to stretch the lead to 3-0. Less than a minute later the lead bulged to 4-0 on the second goal of the season from Thomas Shuldheisz (Andover, Minn./Andover) (Andover, Minn.). The Yellowjackets would get one more goal before the end of the first half, when freshman Ben Kasper (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) (Eagan, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal at 40:45 and it was 5-0 at the break.
It took awhile for the Yellowjackets to break through in the second half, but ultimately they would break through at 60:39. Logan George (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) (Ramsey, Minn.) started the play off with the corner kick and found Dan Warnke (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) (Burnsville, Minn.) at the front of the goal, who scored his third goal of the year on the header to make it 6-0. George would add his third goal of the year just 2:30 later to make it 7-0. The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 82:58 when Mike Sorensen (Duluth, Minn./East) (Duluth, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal to make the final score 8-0.
Royce paced the Yellowjacket offense with his two goals, while George and Warnke had a goal and two assists apiece. George now has goals in three consecutive games. Eric Nilsen (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) (Duluth, Minn.) had three assists.
Nick Osborn (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) (Rosemount, Minn.) made two saves in the game to pick up the win for the Yellowjackets. He improves to 3-1 on the year and all three of his victories have been shutouts. At the other end Miguel Gomez made nine saves for the Lions. The Yellowjackets outshot the Lions 34-4 in the match, including an edge of 17-2 in shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets (7-2, 2-1 WIAC) are back in action on Saturday, October 1 when they will host Bethel University at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
