Yellowjackets 8, Finlandia 0
For the second time in a week, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team took the field against Finlandia University, this time playing the Lions at home. And for the second time in a week, the Yellowjackets blanked the Lions, only this time there was much less drama than the first time around.
Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) (Hermantown, Minn.) scored less than a minute into the match, setting the tone for what would go on to be a dominating 8-0 shutout. It's the second win in a row and the third win in the last four matches for the Yellowjackets, who evened their record for the season at 5-5.
Cossin's unassisted tally just 56 seconds into the match provided all the offense the Yellowjackets would need, but they were far from finished. Ana Morse (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central) (Duluth, Minn.) picked up a loose ball near the Finlandia goal and scored her first collegiate goal at 16:25 to make it 2-0. After a long stretch of play in the Finlandia end of the field, the lead was extended to 3-0 when Savannah Schramm (Carlton, Minn./Carlton) (Carlton, Minn.) scored her third of the year at 40:13.
Coming out of the break the Yellowjackets kept their foot on the pedal and extended the lead some more. Mandee Akson (Pine Island, Minn.) made it 4-0 with her first goal of the season at 46:48. As the half wore on, the Yellowjackets took advantage of their depth and wore the Lions down, further applying pressure in their end of the field. At 60:12 Cossin scored her second goal of the game and team-leading 12th of the year to make it 5-0. Moments later the lead stretched to 6-0 on a goal by Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) (Cloquet, Minn.). It was her second of the year and came at 62:42. At 69:41 of the match, Nichole Casler (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek) (Swartz Creek, Mich.) was awarded a penalty kick, and she buried it for her second goal of the season to make it 7-0. The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring just 25 seconds later, with Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) (Two Harbors, Minn.) scoring her fourth goal of the year to make it 8-0.
Cossin finished the match with two goals and an assist, while Schramm had a goal and two assists. She leads the team with five assists on the year. Casler and Johnson had a goal and an assist apiece.
Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) (Anaheim, Calif.) had to make just one save and got the win for the Yellowjackets, posting her third shutout of the season and improving her record to 4-3 on the year. At the other end, Carlye Buchucuski made 14 saves, as the Yellowjackets held a 14-1 edge in shots on goal and a 41-1 advantage in shots attempted for the match.
