On Saturday night, the Yellowjacket men's hockey needed a win in the worst way.  How bad?  A victory would snap a two-game skid against UW-Eau Claire, a four-game streak overall and a six-game drought in NCHA play.  They weren't able to get the win, but they were able to at least stop the losing, coming-from-behind on two different occasions in a 2-2 tie at Wessman Arena.

A tight defensive battle all night long, the Yellowjackets had chances to open the scoring in the first period but came up short twice.  First, Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) made a perfect set-up to Justin Faryna (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop McNally) on an odd-man rush, but he pushed the shot just wide of the mark.  Later, Dalbec again made a perfect set-up, but this time it was Joey Massingham (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary) who sent one wide and it remained scoreless after one period.

In the second the Blugolds opened the scoring at 8:26 of period when Brian Nehring drove hard to the net and had a puck go off his leg, then the leg of a Yellowjacket defender and into the net to make it 1-0.  Less than two minutes later, however, the Yellowjackets tied the score.  Andy Singerhouse (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) picked up the puck on the left board, turned and fired toward the goal.  Dalbec deflected the puck past Eau Claire goaltender Brandon Stephenson to tie the game at 1-1.  Dalbec's team-leading 13th goal of the year came at 10:04.

The Blugolds took their second lead of the game at 8:04 of the third period.  With a face-off in Yellowjacket territory, Nehring won the draw over to Isiah Bennis, who fired a quick shot from the left circle that snuck under Ben Waalkens (Albert Lea, Minn./Albert Lea) to make it 2-1.  But just like the first time, the Yellowjackets would again bounce back quickly.  At 10:03 of the period, Tyler Klein (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) knocked down a Blugold clearing attempt in the high slot and the puck fell at the feet of Singerhouse, who drove a shot home to tie the game again.  It was the fourth goal of the year for Singerhouse.

From there, neither team enjoyed any good scoring chances.  The game went to overtime, but each team was only able to muster one shot on goal and the game ended in a draw.

Waalkens made 17 saves for the Yellowjackets, watching his record move to 1-1-1.  It was his first appearance since the third game of the season.  Stephenson made 13 saves for Eau Claire.

The Yellowjackets, fueled by a five-minute major and game misconduct to Jeff Forsythe (Campbell River, British Columbia/Timberline Secondary) took four penalties for 19 minutes in the game.  Eau Claire took just two penalties for four minutes.  The Yellowjackets were 0-2 on the power play and Eau Claire was 0-3.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Yellowjackets (8-8-3, 3-6-3 NCHA) as they will host one of the hottest teams in the country on Thursday, January 26 when Twin Ports-rival St. Scholastica comes to town.  Game time will be 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.3 FM KUWS beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  The game can be heard live on the web at www.ifan.tv.  You can also watch the game live via UW-Superior's online video partner, AmericaOneJon Garver will have the call.
