Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis.—There was not much going on offensively for both squads as they failed to score during the first period.  UW-Stevens Point took two penalties within the first five minutes of the period to give the Yellowjackets a five-on-three power play, but they weren't able to capitalize.  During the next ten minutes of the period, it was the Yellowjackets' turn to go on the penalty kill as Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) was tagged for cross checking at 6:59 of the period.  About four minutes later, Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) was caught with a high-stick.  The Yellowjackets successfully killed both of the penalties.  Both teams came up empty on the power play to end the period while producing seven shots each.

The second period was largely uneventful, with scoring chances hard to come by for both teams.  The best scoring opportunities that occurred for UW-Stevens Point were during their only power play chance of the period when Ashley Birdsall (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) went to the box for checking at 11:00 of the second period.  All of that changed when Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) came out of nowhere during the period's final minute as she took a wrist shot that found the back of the net to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.  Schultz and Shrift picked up the assists on the even-strength goal at 19:19.  The Yellowjackets outshot the Pointers 10-8 to wrap up the period.

The Yellowjackets exploded with offense in the game's final period, with an elbowing penalty called at 4:30 of the period helping to get things going. Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) dished the puck at the top of the left circle to Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) where she let a wrist shot go past Pointer goaltender Janna Bielke-Skoug ten seconds into the power play to make it 2-0.  It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to build on that as Lane snuck a shot inside the left pipe 44 seconds later to give the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead.  UW-Stevens Point swapped goaltenders after the goal, but replacement Johanna Sommers didn't stay in the game long - as in a rare move, the Pointers pulled their goalie midway through the third period.  The decision ended up being effective for the Pointers when Ericka Greenen scored the goal with an extra-attacker at 15:50 of the third period to make it 3-1.  The Pointers continued to leave their net empty when they scored another extra-attacker goal 51 seconds later.  Erin Marvin got the credit for the tally to narrow the Yellowjacket lead to 3-2.  The Pointers put Sommers back into the game after the goal and that decision didn't work in the their favor as Chelsey Wierschem (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) banged the puck home to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 4-2.  The Pointers yet again pulled the goaltender and this time it was for the rest of the game.  Kiara DeKezel was in all alone with the puck on the left side where she put an easy shot in the net to make the score 5-2.  Shrift capped off the scoring for the game, putting home another empty net goal at 18:37 of the third period.  UW-Stevens Point outshot the Yellowjackets 10-9 in the third period.

Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) made 23 saves on 21 shots to get the win for the Yellowjackets.  Bielke-Skoug and Sommers combined to make 19 saves in the game.

The Yellowjackets (11-5-2, 10-3-1 NCHA) will have a short break and will be back in action on Tuesday (Jan. 31) where they will take on Gustavus Adolphus College at Wessman Arena.  Game time will be at 7:00 p.m. and can be viewed via webcast at www.ifan.tv.
