Yellowjackets fall in the final minutes

The Yellowjackets were within inches of taking the Redhawks from Ripon College into overtime, but a goal in the 88th minute sealed their fate in a 2-1 heartbreaker.
 
Both teams came out of the gates wanting to prove something.  The two teams traded shots before the Redhawks took a 1-0 lead when Alex Jirik dribbled the ball up field on the right side and dished a pass over the middle to Kali Doerr.  Doerr put a one time shot past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) in the 5th minute.  That wouldn't faze the women in black and yellow in the 23rd minute when Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) booted a ball up the field to a wide open Mallory Engen (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson ).  She finished the play on a laser shot to the left of the net to knot the game at a goal a piece.
 
In an all-around up and down game that saw the shots dead even at five a piece in the second half of play, a let down would eventually happen in the final minutes.  Brandi Peltier played the role of hero for the Redhawks when she took a shot that caught Hatlewick off guard, beating her to the right to give them the 2-1 lead and eventual win in the 88th minute.
 
Hatlewick came up with five saves for the Yellowjackets while Redhawks goalkeeper Sidney Blodgett made five saves as well.
 
The Yellowjackets (5-12, 0-7 WIAC) will have five days of rest before returning to action when they travel to Milwaukee to take on Alverno College on Friday (Oct.26).  Game time is at 1:30 p.m.
