First Conference win of the year

After a long tough season, the Yellowjackets they were able to get their first conference win of the year against UW-Platteville with. With only two conference games left the Yellowjackets battled the full five sets to defeat the Pioneers 3-2.

The first set of the night would set the standard for the rest of the night; both teams would battle for control throughout the night. UW-Platteville would take control of the match after both teams were ties at 16-16. The Pioneers would eventually take a 24-20 lead and after the Yellowjackets scored two points they would fall 25-22 in the first set. Vikki Vinokur would have a strong showing as she would get four kills in the set. Overall, the Yellowjackets would have 16 kills and 5 errors in the first set.

The Yellowjackets would come back and win the second set 25-20, on eight kills and only one error. The highlight of the second set was when Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) lead the Yellowjackets on a 9-0 run while contributing two service aces.

A 2-1 lead would be taken by the Yellowjackets after the third set as they won 25-19. On the night, the offence would be powered by by Vinokur who had 18 kills and Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) who posted 17 kills herself. The two girls would combine for 35 of the Yellowjackets 58 kills on the night.

UW-Platteville would not give up and in the fourth they would start off with a 6-0 run on the Yellowjackets and never looked back. Strong play by the Pioneers would pressure the Yellowjackets in to creating seven errors with 10 kills. They Yellowjackets would post a .088 attack percentage in the set. Although the fourth set was a struggle, throughout the night the Yellowjackets showed strong defense and would get down and get 80 digs on the night. Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would lead the team with 23, she would be assisted by Wirtz who had 22 overall.

In the race to fifteen, the Yellowjackets would lose the lead early but rally back to tie the game at 11-11. With the set tied and their first conference win on the line, a set error by the Pioneers would give the Yellowjackets the ball and a 12-11 lead. With Wirtz serving, Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) who had 45 assists on the night, would set Gosson two straight kills and give the Yellowjackets a 14-11 lead. Then after attacking errors by both teams the UW-Superior volleyball team would have their first conference victory!

The Yellowjackets (18-14, 1-6 WIAC), travel to LaCrosse tomorrow (October 27th), to take on UW-LaCrosse at 12:00pm. After a tough season, the Yellowjackets will be looking to end the season on a high by winning two straight conference games. GO YELLOWJACKETS!
