Yellowjackets open season with sweep of Pipers

The Yellowjackets kicked-off the 2012-13 season with a kick in their step offensively, cruising to a 6-1 defeat of Hamline University.
 
The offensive fire power for the Yellowjackets literally came out of the gates, coming up with two goals within the first minute of play.  Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) notched the first goal to make it 1-0 at 0:44 of the first period.  The Yellowjackets came back and added another goal :12 later when Ashley Birdsall (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) put home a shot to make the score 2-0.  The Pipers didn't respond until the 4:03 into the second period when Jordan Verleye slipped a shot past Yellowjacket goaltender Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate) to make things 2-1.
 
Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) went on a tear from that point forward, coming up with two goals in the second period.  One coming at 4:48 to extend the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1, and another coming at 12:07 to make the score 4-1.  A pair of Yellowjackets notched their first collegiate goals to close out the scoring.  Mara Teschendorf (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) was one of them at 15:55 in the third period to make it 5-1; Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) was the other coming at 9:24 to make it 6-1.
 
Peters made 19 saves for the Yellowjackets while Piper goaltender Sarah Schneekloth stopped 34 shots.

The Yellowjackets put an exclamation point on the weekend sweep with a 4-1 win over Hamline University.
 
Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) lit the lamp first for the Yellowjackets at 18:43 to make the score 1-0.  Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) and Mayhew got the assists on the play.  The Yellowjackets wouldn't score until the third period when Mayhew continued her fabulous weekend with another goal at 3:25 to make things 2-0.  Haleigh Bolton answered for the Pipers at 8:21 of the third period to make it 2-1 before Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) and Mayhew closed out the scoring for the Yellowjackets at 14:10 and 19:11 of the third period respectively. 
 
Peters made 12 saves for the Yellowjackets while Caitlin Nosanov stopped 42 shots for the Pipers.
 
The Yellowjackets (1-1, 0-0 NCHA) will return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 30th) when they will travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.  The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
