Box Score

SUPERIOR,Wis.—The best way to describe the first period was up and down, as both teams had their fair share of scoring opportunities.  The Yellowjackets had a power play opportunity early when UW-Eau Claire took a hooking penalty at 1:32, but the Blugolds were able to kil the penalty.  It was the Blugolds' turn to go on the power play approximately two minutes later, but the Yellowjacket penalty came up big, killing off the penalty.  An interference call on Ashlee Olson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) at 10:08 of the first period came back to haunt the Yellowjaackets when UW-Eau Claire's Toni Simones snuck a shot between Shanley Peters (Gnadenthal, Manitoba/Garden Valley Collegiate)' right leg pad and the post to make it 1-0.  The Blugolds ended up going 1-4 on the power play to close out the first while the Yellowjackets went 0-2.  In an-all around even first session, the Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets 11-9.

The Yellowjackets had a solid start to the second period when Kiara DeKezel went all alone up the middle, snapping off a wrist shot that beat UW-Eau Claire goaltender Morgan Pieper top-shelf to tie the game 1-1.  The Yellowjackets built on that goal 1:13 later when Kaiti Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg) let a shot go from the point to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead on the power play.  The teams continued the back-and-forth play, but the Blugolds found the back of the net at 11:37 to tie the game 2-2.  The second period found the Yellowjackets on top in the shot department 9-6.

Penalties on both sides were the main headline for the third period.  The Yellowjackets and Blugolds played four-on-four hockey at 4:59 when Sheryl Kaskiw (Souris, Manitoba/Souris Collegiate) took a roughing penalty while the Blugolds' Sam Knutson was tagged for a high stick.  The Yellowjackets went on the power play later, at 5:54, but the extra skater didn't matter.  Simones blocked a shot for the Blugolds that kicked out to Dani Kerr.  Kerr took the puck up the ice on a two-on-one and she dished a pass over to Simones who was in front of the net to put the shot home, putting the Blugolds up 3-2, which is where things would end up.

Peters got the start for the Yellowjackets, blocking 22 shots, while Pieper stood up to 21 shots.

The Yellowjackets (13-6-2, 11-4-2 NCHA) will look to rebound against UW-Eau Claire tomorrow (Feb.11) at 2 p.m.  The game can be viewed live via webcast at www.ifan.tv
