Box Score

SUPERIOR,Wis.—It was all Blugolds in the opening minutes of the first period when they came out with the first five shots of the game.  UW-Eau Claire had a great scoring opportunity at 2:10 of the opening session when Andi Husted hit the pipe from the top right circle.  The Yellowjackets took two penalties in first ten minutes as Teal Crosson (Alexander, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) was tagged for an interference at 2:24 and Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) was caught checking at 8:36.  The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets after those penalties expired.  However, it was the Yellowjackets finding the net when Haley Olmstead (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North) let a shot go top-shelf to put them up 1-0.

A UW-Eau Claire holding call at 19:37 of the first period gave the Yellowjackets more momentum.  Alison Shrift (Traverse City, Mich./West High School) didn't waste any time as she slipped a wrist shot past Blugold goaltender Morgan Pieper six seconds into the power play to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead.  The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjacket 8-5 in the first period.

Down by two goals, the Blugolds came out in the second period wanting to prove that what happened in the first period was just a fluke.  A Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) penalty didn't help the Yellowjackets' cause as the Blugolds capitalized with a power play goal by Sam Knutson to narrow the Yellowjacket lead 2-1.  The Yellowjackets didn't take long to answer as Dani Schultz (Morris, Minn./Morris Area) tipped in a slap shot by Mayhew from the point to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead, and that's how the teams would go to the locker room.  The Blugolds outshot the Yellowjackets 11-8 in the second period.  Penalties were also a story in the second period with the teams combining for six penalties while each team scored once with the extra skater.

When the third period came around, the Yellowjackets struggled to get shots on net, recording only four in the final stanza.  However, they only needed one shot to record an insurance goal.  That came when Kiara DeKezel lit the lamp at 3:35 of the third period to give the Yellowjackets breathing room, putting them up 4-1.
After the Yellowjackets and Blugolds traded a pair of penalties in the third period, the Blugolds found themselves back in the game when Katie Ward scored at 18:07 to narrow the Yellowjacket lead to 4-2.  The Blugolds built on that a minute-and-a-half later when Casey McMullen scored to make the game 4-3, but the Yellowjackets held their own for the balance of the game and that's how things ended up.

Amy Torgerson (Wentzville, Mo./Gilmour Academy) started in goal for the Yellowjackets, making 33 saves while Pieper made 13 saves for the Blugolds.

The Yellowjackets (14-6-2, 12-4-2 NCHA) will travel to Duluth, Minn. to take on the College of St. Scholastica on Friday (Feb.17).  Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
