O'Brien Cup Semis: Yellowjackets vs. Bulldogs

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team cruised through the first round of the O'Brien Cup Playoffs last weekend, sweeping St. Norbert College out of the derby and putting an end to the Green Knights' season.  They did it by striking early and often.

On Friday, they scored three goals in a span of 2:56 to build an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the first period.  Then on Saturday afternoon they scored twice in 36 seconds and were up 2-0 after one.

"On Friday we were struggling to get going but those three quick goals really gave us confidence.  We know that when we score that many, chances are we are going to win," Head Coach Dan Laughlin said.  "We're a good team defensively so we know if we can limit the other team's chances we'll be in good shape and that was the case on Friday.

"Saturday we did the same thing and got out to 3-0.  But give St. Norbert credit, they fought back into the game and made things tough on us."

Things will be a little bit tougher from here on out.

The Yellowjackets, who are the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, will face Adrian College in the semifinals, a team that they have seen limited success against over the years.  And they'll have to do it with a roster that has been decimated by injuries.

"Injuries are part of the game, but our team hasn't used it as a crutch all season," Laughlin said.  "We have a good group of players that have worked extremely hard and fought through everything.  If they keep working hard, they know that good things will happen for them."

All-time the Yellowjackets have won just two of the 11 meetings with Adrian, and are winless in the last seven.

"We've had our troubles with them in the past, but in the playoffs its a new season," Laughlin said.  "We've had tight games with them this year and I think we match up well with them.  It should be a good game because both teams are of the thinking that they have to keep winning to get into the NCAA tournament.  Losing anytime in this tournament isn't going to get it done so both teams will be playing with urgency, playing good, competitive hockey."
