Strong second half lifts Yellowjackets over Tommies

Box Score
Yellowjackets 3, University of St. Thomas 1
Box Score

The Yellowjackets turned it up a notch in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to help put the icing on a 3-1 Yellowjacket victory.

The Tommies struck the scoreboard first when Brett Day snuck a shot past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead 18:15 into the match.  The first half was statistically even among both teams as the shots were 8-7 in favor of St. Thomas.

Despite the fact that the Tommies outshot the Yellowjackets 14-6 in the second half, it was the Yellowjackets that found a way to put the ball in the net somehow.  Ben Kasper (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) scored first for the Yellowjackets on a penalty kick to tie the game at a goal a piece in the 53rd minute.  The lead would go to the Yellowjackets soon after that point when Nate Engel (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) executed an excellent pass over to Ryan Linsmayer (Dresser, Wis./Osceola) who did the rest of the work to make the score 2-1 Yellowjackets in the 57th minute.  The goal was the second of the season for the freshman Linsmayer.

Another Yellowjacket tacked on their second goal of the season in the 83rd minute of the match, this time it was John Levenick (Champlin, Minn./Champlin).  He was assisted on the goal by Alex Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) to make the score 3-1.

Elder made seven saves for the Yellowjackets while Jace Leiferman came up with four stops for the Tommies.

The Yellowjackets (5-2, 0-0 WIAC) will go back to the Twin Cities area tomorrow, this time taking on the Storm from Crown College.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
