Yellowjackets steal home team's crown

Box Score

Yellowjackets 6, Crown College 1
Box Score

The Yellowjackets finish 2-0 on their two game road stand in the Twin Cities as they clobbered Crown College 6-1 in front of a sparse crowd of 94 spectators.

The flood gates opened in the 16th minute for the Yellowjackets when Crown College goalkeeper Duncan Sloan came out of the net.  That made Yellowjacket forward John Levenick (Champlin, Minn./Champlin) lick his chops when he went for the loose ball and put home a shot on a wide open net to make the score 1-0 Yellowjackets.  That only fueled Levenick's fire that much more when he capitalized ten minutes later when he took a picture perfect pass from Brian Chapman (Maple Grove, Minn./).  He would do the rest of the work from there, beating Sloan on his left to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 2-0.

The Yellowjackets got a taste of luck in the 33rd minute when Crown goalkeeper Sloan made a save that got kicked back to Eric Strohbeen.  The ball somehow went off Strohbeen and went in Crown's own goal to make the score 3-0.

Ben Royce (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) tacked on a goal about four minutes into the second half on a penalty kick to widen the Yellowjacket lead to 4-0.  The penalty kick was a result of a red card on Crown's Angelo Silione.

The Storm added their first goal of the game in the 53rd minute when Kevin Hepner beat Connor Iverson (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) on the left side to narrow the score to 4-1.  However, the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring late in the game when a pair of Yellowjackets notched their first collegiate goals.  The first one went to Jake Friendt (Andover, Minn./Andover) in the 81st minute to make things 5-1.  Giacomo Matrone (Sao Paulo, Brazil/) was the other Yellowjacket scoring their first career goal on an assist by Dan Baga (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) in the 87th minute.

Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Iverson didn't register a save for the Yellowjackets as each goalkeeper played 45:00.  Sloan came up with nine saves for the Storm.

The Yellowjackets (6-2, 0-0 WIAC) will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 23) where they will travel to Loras College.  Game time is at 12:00 p.m.
