Falcons edge out Yellowjackets

The Yellowjackets were able to cut a 2-0 UW-River Falls lead in half, but came up short in a bid for their first WIAC win of the season in a 2-1 loss.
 
The Falcons added their first goal in the seventh minute when Cassie Stang finished on a perfect feed by Missy Barnett to make the score 1-0.  Despite the goal, the Yellowjackets outplayed the Falcons as they outshot them 2-1 at that point.  The Yellowjackets continued to hold their own until the 42nd minute when Andrea Scanlon beat Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) high and to her right to extend the Falcon lead to 2-0.  A strong start to the first half for the Yellowjackets wasn't enough as the Falcons managed to come up on top in the shots department 8-3 for the half.
 
The Yellowjackets started off the second half much like the first half, opening the frame with two unanswered shots.  However, one of those shots found its way into the net when Ana Morse (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central) tricked the ball into the net about three minutes into the half to cut the Falcon lead in half at 2-1.  Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) got the helper on the goal.  Unfortunately, it was all Falcons from there as they went on to outshoot the Yellowjackets 8-2 for the remainder of the contest.
 
Paige came up with seven saves for the Yellowjackets while Rebecca Kramer stopped three shots for UW-River Falls.
 
The Yellowjackets (2-4, 0-2 WIAC) will resume WIAC play on Saturday (Sept. 22) where they will travel to Menomonie, Wis. to challenge UW-Stout.  Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
