Box Score

After Friday's tough loss against UW-Whitewater, the Yellowjackets came out slow in Saturday's game against UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stevens Point is ranked #24 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association and was picked to finish second behind UW-Whitewater in the WIAC. Both teams are very strong offensively and defensively and although UW-Superior was defeated by both teams they show promise that they can compete on a high level, as they continue to improve throughout the remainder of the season.

The first set was the toughest for the Yellowjackets as they fell 25-11. While on the attack they Yellowjackets only had six kills while creating nine errors. On the other side of the court the Pointers had 14 kills with only three errors.

In the second set the Yellowjackets were able to flip their attacking percentage and get back on the positive side of things. However, another well played set by the Pointers cost the Yellowjackets the set 25-18. Aside from errors by the Yellowjackets, long scoring runs by UW-Stevens Points made it difficult for the to keep up. It wasn't until late in the set that Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) led the Yellowjackets to their first three-point run of the afternoon, when she served up two aces in a row against the Pointers.

The highlight of the day came in the third set for the Yellowjackets, as they won the set 25-17. The key factor for the Yellowjackets was that they only created one error. Momentum was won in the set when Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) lead them to four straight points to finish out the set, while having two serving aces.

In the final set of the game both teams battled for control early. Neither team took more than a point lead until Hannah Picel of UW-Stevens Point took the Pointers on a five point run after being tied 9-9. The Yellowjackets again showed life as they battled back within one point to make the score 18-17. However, two more multiple-point runs by the Pointers would be too much of the Yellowjackets in the end.

After a very slow start, the Yellowjackets were able to overcome errors and show promising potential for the rest of the year. Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) lead the team offensively with 12 kills and only 3 errors on the night. Keely Dearick had another good night setting for the Yellowjackets as she had 31 assists. Defensively four UW-Superior players - Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko), Lauren Peterson (Deer River, Minn./Deer River), Cole and Deadrick had double-digit digs on the night.

The Yellowjackets (12-4, 0-2 WIAC) will get back to the grind on Tuesday, September 25 when they travel to St. Joseph, Minn. to take on the College of St. Benedict.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.
