Box Score

Going into Tuesday's match, both the Yellowjackets and the Blazers of St. Benedict were 12-4 and coming off tough losses. The Blazers were able to jump out early on the Yellowjackets and never looked back, picking up the straight-set win on their home court.

In the first set, the Blazers got out to a 5-0 lead before an attacking error put the Yellowjackets on the board. Both teams would battle for points until Farrah Wirtz (Esko, Minn./Esko) served the Yellowjackets to a 14-14 tie. After both teams exchanged points, it was a serving ace by Nikki Gosson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) that would give UW-Superior a 19-17 lead, their biggest advantage of the night. After gaining the lead, however, things fell apart.  Errors on five of the last eight points by the Yellowjackets helped the Blazers come from behind and pick up the 25-20 win.

The second set was also consumed by the Yellowjackets trying to catch the Blazers. Although, the Yellowjackets were able to open the set with a kill by Kitty Tynen (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), the Blazers would again take the lead. With the Yellowjackets trailing 18-13, a kill by Salann Gilbert (Solon Springs, Wis./Solon Springs) would allow Emily Cole (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) to serve the Yellowjackets to within one, 18-17. The 5-0 run would be capped off by two straight kills from Brook Vonasek (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks). However, the Yellowjackets would eventually lose the set by the same 25-20 score.

It was more of the same in the third set, as the Yellowjackets struggled to get their sputtering offense going.  The lack of consistency kept them behind for much of the set, which they dropped 25-18.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets struggled all night. As they did in the first set, the Yellowjackets would create more errors than kills and post a -.043 attacking percentage. Their overall attack percentage on the night would drop to .007, their lowest percentage of the year.

Defensively, UW-Superior had 67 kills and six team blocks, Gosson and Jessica Zimmerman (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) would team up for three block assists each.

The UW-Superior Yellowjackets (12-5, 0-2 WIAC) will be back on the road this weekend at the St. Norbert College Tournament, where they will take on Finlandia University, Carthage College, St. Norbert College, and UW-Eau Claire. The Yellowjackets are 10-2 in tournament games this year giving them confidence as they look to get back in the winning column.
