Yellowjackets, WIAC team up for breast cancer awareness

For the fifth straight year, the Yellowjacket volleyball team will join other Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)  schools and participate in promotions that support breast cancer awareness.

Each of the nine WIAC schools will be involved in at least one promotional event throughout the month of October, using different vehicles to raise money for breast cancer awareness.  Over the past four years, WIAC members have raised more than $88,000 in support.

"It truly is amazing to see the work that the members of our conference put into the different charitable activities throughout the year, including this one for breast cancer awareness," athletics director Steve Nelson said.  "Just about everyone has, in one way or another, been touched by cancer and if we can do a little something to help raise money we're excited to have that opportunity."

The Yellowjackets will play their "Dig Pink" game on Friday, October 5 when they play host to UW-Oshkosh at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.  Spectators are encouraged to wear pink in support of all those affected by breast cancer.

Beginning now through the month of October, the Yellowjackets will be taking donations online for the Side-Out Foundation, which was established in 2004 to unite volleyball players and coaches to have them work toward the common goal of furthering breast cancer awareness, education and patient services.

Donations will be accepted at all Yellowjacket home volleyball games in October, and they can also be made online through the UW-Superior page on the Side-Out Foundation web site.
