"Caps for Cancer" coming October 6

The Yellowjacket men's and women's soccer teams will be hosting their second annual "Caps for Cancer" day on Saturday, October 6.  That day the teams will play a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader against UW-Whitewater.  The women will play at 2:00 p.m. and the men will start at approximately 4:30 p.m.  Both games will be played at Public Schools Stadium, located at 46th Avenue West and West 5th Street in Duluth.

Admission to the games is free and fans attending are asked to bring new, winter-style hats for men, women and children to be donated.  Baseball caps will be accepted, but are not preferred at this event.

"We had a tremendous amount of success with this event our first time trying it last year and we want to build on that," men's soccer head coach Joe Mooney said.  "We want people to come out enjoy a couple of soccer games and help support a great cause for our area."

Caps that are collected will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, which is funded by the Miller Dwan Foundation and located in the Essentia Health Cancer Center.  The caps will be given to people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment in the Twin Ports as well as Ashland and the surrounding area.

In the event's first year, more than 300 hats were collected.

"We exceeded expecations for this event in the first year.  The bar is pretty high but I think that we can do an even better job and collect even more for people in need this year," Mooney said.  "It's a great way for our teams to be involved, and I know that our athletes are looking forward to helping out and being a part of it."

The game will coincide with women's soccer team's "Playing for a Cause" game.  For the second straight year, the women's soccer teams in the WIAC have each selected a different cause that, for one game, they will play for.  The Yellowjacket women's team is once again playing for breast cancer awareness and they will be wearing pink in the match against Whitewater.

"We're excited to be a part of a day that involves so many great causes," women's soccer head coach Melissa Nelmark said.  "To be able to help people locally by collecting hats, to wearing pink to raise money for breast cancer awareness and doing it all while playing soccer is a great thing for our university and our community.  We are happy to be doing this and helping out any way we can."

The matches also fall on UW-Superior Homecoming Weekend and will be played the day before each team hosts their annual alumni games.

Winter caps for men, women and children can be donated at the games that day, or can be dropped of at the UW-Superior Athletic Offices, located on the second floor of the Marcovich Wellness Center on the UW-Superior campus.  Anyone with questions about the event or for more information should contact Jon garver with Yellowjacket Athletics at (715) 395-4614.
