Box Score

The Yellowjackets dominated Marian University on the shot chart as they outshot them 40-10.  However, that had no reflection on the stat that matters the most, the final score.  The Yellowjackets went on to squeak past the Sabres by a score of 2-1.

From the looks of it, the Yellowjackets were well on their way to dominating this game early in the contest.  Hayley Epema (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) got things rolling for the Yellowjackets when she took a shot from the top of the left circle.  That shot somehow found its way into the net after it looked like Marian University goaltender Amanda Alexander saved it.  However, it snuck between Alexander's leg pad and the left post to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at 2:27 of the first period.

From there it looked like it was going to be all Yellowjackets, but it didn't end up that way.  Marian University eventually tied the game at a goal a piece on the power play when Amanda Waigand was in front of the net and forced the puck on a second effort attempt past Yellowjacket goaltender Megan Leikkari (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Westgate CV&I).  The power play goal came at 7:19 of the second period.

The Yellowjackets wouldn't let the struggling Sabres get away that easy, even though it took them until the third period to do so.  Bailey Lane (Armada, Mich./Armada) was a huge reason why the Yellowjackets didn't let up as she took a pass from Kerry Mayhew (Littleton,Colo./Heritage) and skated up toward the front of the net.  She would finish the job on a wrist shot that beat Alexander to give the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead at 3:28 of the third period.

Leikkari made nine saves for the Yellowjackets while Alexander stood up 38 shots for the Sabres.

The Yellowjackets (10-6-1, 6-5-1 NCHA) will look to put the exclamation point on the weekend series with Marian University tomorrow (Jan. 26th) at Wessman Arena.  Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
