Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, Northland 2 (2 OT)

For the Yellowjacket women's soccer team, which has been ravaged by injuries throughout the year, a 90-minute game can be a real marathon. And if a standard game is a marathon, then Tuesday's match with Northland College must have been the soccer equivalent of an ultramarathon.

The regulation 90 minutes were not enough to decide a winner, and when all was said and done neither were a pair of overtimes. Twice in the match the Yellowjackets fought from behind to pull even and settled for a 2-2 tie with the Lumberjills at the Superior Soccer Complex.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Lumberjills by an almost 2-to-1 margin in the game, but goalkeeper Jessica Jaeckel was outstanding, finishing the match with 11 saves. At the other end for the Yellowjackets Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) also had a strong match, making six saves.

Northland opened the scoring at 9:21 of the first half as Sarah Hudson scored. The Yellowjackets came back to tie the match in the 16th minute. Team scoring leader Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) used some nifty footwork to nimbly get herself free and spring Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) on the breakaway, and the junior put home her first goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game.

Less than five minutes later, however, the Lumberjills regained the lead as Jolynn Dohmann scored in the 21st minute to give them a 2-1 lead, a lead they would take into halftime despite being outshot in the frame.

Just as they did the first time they fell behind, the Yellowjackets worked their way back to even, scoring early in the second half.

With the Yellowjackets being awarded a corner kick, Rachel Wallace (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia) let a shot go that reached the front of the goal and freshman Miranda Garrelts (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) directed it to the back of the net for her second goal of the season and tying the match at 2-2 in the 53nd minute.

The rest of the way the Yellowjackets continued to apply pressure, attempting seven shots in the half to Northland's four, but they were unable to solve Jaeckel for the go-ahead tally.

Northland outshot the Yellowjackets in the first ten-minute overtime by a 1-0 margin. In the second, however, the Yellowjackets turned the tables and put three shots on goal, but again Jaeckel was there to keep the score tied. The final scoring chance of the match went to the Lumberjills with just under two minutes to play, but Hatlewick turned it aside and the teams settled for a tie.

The Yellowjackets (3-8-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) will host UW-Stout at the Superior Soccer Complex on Saturday, October 5. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
