Pointers shut out Yellowjackets

The Yellowjacket women's was looking to secure their first conference of the season on Saturday, but UW-Stevens Point had other ideas. After a close first half, the Pointers used three second half goals to pull away and went on to a 4-0 victory over the Yellowjackets in Stevens Point, Wis.

Stevens Point scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 12th minute as Kim Gietman scored her first goal of the season to make it 1-0. The remainder of the first half stayed even and the Yellowjackets went to the break trailing by just a goal.

The Pointers put things out of reach in the early stages of the second half. Just 2:06 into the half the scored went to 2-0 on a goal by Emily Dietrich. Moments later, 1:43 to be exact, the Pointers took a 3-0 lead on a Sarah Meylor goal. Meylor scored her second goal of the contest in the 60th minute to make the final score 4-0.

Stevens Point outshot the Yellowjackets 23-1 in the match. Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif./Loara) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and finished the match with 19 saves. At the other end Kristen Churkey got the win for Stevens Point, making one save. Chelsea Cossin (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) had the lone shot on goal for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (3-11-1, 0-5-0 WIAC) return to action on Saturday, October 19 when they travel to UW-Whitewater to take on the Warhawks. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
